Bless Me, Ultima Critical Analysis essays
Bless Me, Ultima Critical Analysis essays 1. "The waters of the pool were clear and pure, but dark from their depth and shadows of the surrounding brush. The sun was crystaline white in the clear, blue sky, but still there was the darkness of shadows in this sacred spot," (113). Throughout the entire novel of Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio struggles to be received by fellow students in his class. The best season of the year to attempt to associate with friends is the summer period. Instead of appearing, gray and contrasting like it does in winter, the "waters of the pool are clear and pure." "The sun was crystaline white in the clear, blue sky" embodies the mood and ambience of the summer season. The "darkness of the shadows" implies that both autumn and winter are just around the corner. Summer helps me to recognize the wonders and miracles that the earth truly has to offer. Variation will come with the rotation of the seasons, but summer will keep hopes and joy running high for Antonio. He gets to start school being accepted and having some friends. Before the school year begins, Antonio needs to fight to meet new friends, and Antonio needs to soak up as much information from Ultima as humanly possible to help prepare him for school. 2. "The green of the river passed through a bright orange and turned brown. The trickle of water in the river bed was quiet, not singing as in summer. The afternoons were gray and quiet, charged with the air of ripeness and belonging," (147). During the seasonal progression throughout the year, Antonio reminisces about the previous summer, which is his learning season with Ultima. Antonio has become harmonized with the environment, and has learned to cherish the ever-changing nature surrounding him. He notices that the vigor and the intensity of the river is being depleted by the arrival of the winter season."The trickle of water in the river bed was quiet, not singing as in the summer" is the obvious clue that the river i ...

U.S. History from 1700 to 1877 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
U.S. History from 1700 to 1877 - Essay Example The book ââ¬ËThe Negro in American Rebellionââ¬â¢ by William Wells Brown, a noted literary figure, highlights the contributions of African-Americans in the military, in previous wars and in various slave uprisings. Recounted in less traditional historical point of view, the book argues that the African-American involvement and contributions to the war efforts were ignored or misrepresented in other traditional historical documentation which chronicled the life of African-American soldiers. The essay also describes that the book has a few weaknesses but on the whole the authorââ¬â¢s arguments are convincing as they were backed by primary sources, such as newspaper articles and documents published by the government. The authorââ¬â¢s agenda is mentioned in the essay in details and is apparent from the beginning: To promote the rights of African-Americans, acknowledge the contributions of the African-Americans in the war, support the anti-slavery efforts and bestow voting rights to soldiers of African descent in the Union. In conclusion, author of this essay suggests that Brownââ¬â¢s book is important in the understanding of the American history and experience as a whole in that it offers a disparate insight of life in the past. It factually depicts the struggles of the African-American soldiers and argues for the acknowledgement of their heroism. The experiences of the African-American soldiers in uprisings, rebellion and war cannot be discounted as they form a collective consciousness of the American life.

Human Resource Management in a Business Context Essay
Human Resource Management in a Business Context - Essay Example HR management can play a role in environmental scanning i.e. identifying and analysing external opportunities and threats that may be crucial to the company's success. Similarly HR management is in a unique position to supply competitive intelligence that may be useful in the strategic planning process. HR also participates in the strategy formulation process by supplying information regarding the company's internal strengths and weaknesses. The strengths and weaknesses of a company's human resources can have a determining effect on the viability of the firm's strategic options. So, Human Resources of such companies as Solaris Hotel and Libra Holidays Group Public Limited take up a role of Business Strategic Partner. Translating business strategies into HR practices helps a business in three ways. First, the business can adapt to change because the time from the conception to the execution of a strategy is shortened. Second, the business can better meet customer demands because its customer service strategies have been translated into specific policies and practices. Third, the business can achieve financial performance through its more effective execution of strategy. "We are the people who take pride in high professional standards. We are client focused. We stand behind our promise to deliver value for money and efficient client service. We already rank amongst the ten biggest tour operators in the UK. Our vision is to become one of the top 20 European tour operators. And we will achieve it." (11) So, Libra Holidays Group is the number one travel Group in tourism world. The Group is structured to include such fields of imposing operations as Tour Operations, Air Transport, Customer Service and Hotels. Investing on the capabilities of its people and strengthening its existing potentials in all fields of activity it anticipates its inclusion among the 20 leading tour operators in Europe. And the Libra Group has a global HR department. There are established procedures for recruitment and selection, training and development, and performance appraisal. The Solaris Hotel is a small Family Hotel with a high proportion of the staff which has worked there for many years. Recruitment of the new staff is usually on the recommendation of existing staff. Training tends to be mainly on-the-job by watching and working with more experienced member of employees. The staff is very flexible. And these two companies has decided to merge, Solaris Hotel is going to be a part of Libra Holidays Group. But there is a question: what are the changes required to enable the Solaris to become a successful member of the Libra Group That's why the aims of the topic are: 1) to suggest a series of proposals regarding the management style and performance management; 2) to define the main principles of the recruitment strategy; 3) to provide training and development processes for the staff. Main body What should be done to combine Human Resources functions when a merger happens The answer to this question depends upon a number of factors: the level of sophistication found in the Human Resources functions that exists; the charter of HR in the pre-merger organisations; and the capacity of those HR functions to meet the new demands. Well, to begin successful integration into the Libra Group Solaris company needs to provide the guidance and the process

Candidate Conundrum Summary Essay Example for Free
Candidate Conundrum Summary Essay The company personnel Robert (Manager) and Paul (Project leader) are interviewing two potential candidates Sonya and Jacqueline for a new position at the company. After interviewing both candidates Paul feels Sonya is the one they should hire while Robert believes they should hire Jacqueline. Paulââ¬â¢s reasoning is that he feels heââ¬â¢d work better with Sonya both being Caucasian while Robert thinks Paul may have personal feelings for his choice. Robert believes having Jacqueline hired will provide more diversity to the company, but Paul feels he is hiring her solely because of her race since it is stated that both candidates have the same qualifications. The issue is that both have valid reasons for wanting his choice for the job position. What did/didnââ¬â¢t the manager do well: Robert handled the situation relatively well. He listened to Paulââ¬â¢s reasoning for his choice, but was quite set with his decision to choose Jacqueline already. Due to his opinion he didnââ¬â¢t appear to consider Paulââ¬â¢s point of view. Robert shouldnââ¬â¢t have made up his mind on his decision prior to meeting with Paul at the end. This prevented him from having an open mind about Paulââ¬â¢s choice. What would you have done differently: If we were in Robertââ¬â¢s situation we would have tried to keep our minds open to consider Sonya as an option and take Paulââ¬â¢s reasoning into consideration. We probably would have still picked Jacqueline as well because we thought Robertââ¬â¢s reasons were completely valid. In the end Robert had a good case to not hire Sonya and choose Jacqueline for the position.

The Genetic Screening Dilemma Essay -- Technology Science DNA Essays
The Genetic Screening Dilemma The National Academy of Science defines genetic screening as the systematic search of a population for persons with latent, early, or asymptomatic disease. The term genetic testing is often used interchangeably, but differs in that it only targets those individuals believed to be at high risk for an inherited condition. Genetic screening has a much broader target population. As genetic screening becomes easier, faster, and less expensive, there is a growing debate about who should be tested, what those results should be used for, and who should have access to those results. Before addressing these questions it is necessary to understand the basic processes involved in genetic screening. The techniques used for genetic screening are based on the recognition of nucleotide sequences in the DNA. The most commonly used method is called restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP). RFLP uses restriction enzymes to cleave the DNA at specific sequences. Cleavage of the DNA generates small restriction fragments of varying length. Electrophoresis is then used to separate the fragments with respect to size and/or charge. The sample is added to an agarose gel plate which is electrically charged for a specific length of time. The smaller and more negatively charged fragments move to the positively charged pole the quickest. A banding pattern with many bands is generated. The bands are then transferred to a nylon membrane by Southern Blot. A radiolabled probe which binds specifically to a sequence of interest is added to the membrane. The banding pattern can now be observed and specific sequences identified. The problems with RFLP are that it is expensive and time consuming. RFLP is the process used for... ...for research. I do not believe that the knowledge of genetic information will affect the decision to reproduce to the extent that alleles will actually be eliminated. Many people will probably not even know their exact genetic makeup. Those who do may decide to have children regardless of the risks. Due to these situations, the elimination of an allele from a human population would be very unlikely. There is also a high likelihood of gene flow occurring between populations because people are highly mobile. Gene flow between populations would act to increase diversity and counteract any reduction of alleles that is taking place. Genetic screening is a powerful technology. Many risks are involved, but they can be easily reduced by responsible management of information. The information that can be gained with the aid of genetic screening far outweighs the risks.

Beautiful Tragic Love (Creative Writing)
g Beautiful Tragic Love I never asked my life to be a FAIRY TALE or PERFECT, all I wanted was a normal life, and I didn't have a very happy childhood living with my parents as an only child. As I was growing up all my life it revolved around men, every time I would fall in love with one, they would leave me after 3 months. I was beginning to feel like a hopeless romantic just like my mum when my dad had left her when I was beginning to experiment with love. I felt cursed. I kept asking myself ââ¬Å"WHY, WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO ME All men are dogs! I am almost twenty one and I donââ¬â¢t know if the problem lies with me or my family, all I know is that I have given my parents so much problems and so muchà pain, I guess my life is a long journey and am finding myself in it everyday. My story began last summer of 2009; I could feel that there was something in the air that day. Birds were chirping, the wind was blowing leaving me shivers down my spine and everything felt so alive. I had beenà depressedà for about a year before that day.I wasà walkingà alongà the beachà with my bare feet buried in the sand and the waves of the sea crushing into my feet when my life started to take a turn for the bestâ⬠¦ From a distance I saw a handsome young man admiring me from far. Our eyes met and it was like nothing I had ever felt before with any of the men I had been with. It was something special. We beganà walkingà closer together like something out of a movie. I felt onà top of the world for once, my eyes were sparkling and myà stomachà was fluttering with butterflies, as we walked closer and closer to each other. When we became close enough to talk about our personal lives, Will would get on his knee and speak my fluent language, French and say the mostà romanticà things. At that point I knew he had my heart. We talked until 2. 00 a. m. The nextà morning it turned out that he lives only about ten minutes from where I was living. We started seeing more of each other, Will begin to get serious about us. I fought the depressionà that I had and soon I was glowing with life and he was the world to me, he became my anything and everything. We had been going out for about six months when he met my mother. My mother disapproved of Will mainly because she thought I was too young to be in a serious relationship and that I wasnââ¬â¢t ready because this relationship might end up like the rest of my other terrible relationship. Just like any mother she was worried about me but I kept reassuring her that this time it was something different. She soon banned me from seeing him. For a while we went out against her will and had four more months of endless happiness. I had finally met someone whom I loved and wanted to spend the rest of my life with. One day when I finished from work he had texted me to meet him at the same beach we met a year ago. When I got there I saw him standing on one of the big rocks beside the sea , he waved from far and yelled my name ââ¬Å"LAKE, AM OVER HERE! â⬠my heart was beating so fast as if I was in a race. When I got on the rock with him, it was nearly sunset time; he took both of my hands (Oh My God) I screamed quietly inside with excitement hoping that he would say something along the lines of marrying him. He looked at me straight in the eye to show that he was serious, and started saying ââ¬Å"Lake ever since I have laid eyes on you, itââ¬â¢s like you have awaked me from my soul, and I donââ¬â¢t see life without you. He moved on from saying ââ¬Å"Would you like to move in with me? â⬠All I could feel was special, wanted, happy, in love, and emotional all at the same time. Few tears dropped down my cheeks without realizing because I kept repeating what he had just said. No boy had ever said anything like what Will had said. Holding me closer to him I looked him deep in those amazing emerald green eyes and answered ââ¬Å"YES!!! â⬠as I fall in to kiss him. Life couldnââ¬â¢t have got any better; we were so madly in love that we couldnââ¬â¢t wait so we got married a few months later. It has been two years since we got married and it feels like it was just yesterday. On our two yearà anniversary, I was 4 months pregnant with our first child, so that night he had planned to take me out to a fancyà French Restaurant. As we were leaving we both looked up at the big beautiful moon, it was shinning like a bight, bright light, it was just the perfect moment in my life where I could hold pause forever. When suddenly a man came out of the shadows with a gun, he came took my purse and Will's wallet. Someone saw the crime taking place and screamed ââ¬Å"STOPâ⬠at the man.Everything became a blur as Will threw himself in front of me as the gun went off. I couldnââ¬â¢t believe my eyes, what I hadnââ¬â¢t envisioned in a million years seemed to become a reality. The robber ran off into the night and left Will to d ie in my arms. I looked down at him and tears started to explode down my cheeks as I screamed ââ¬Å"HELP! â⬠ââ¬Å"SOMEONE CALL THE AMBALANCE! â⬠I held him closely for the longest time as he bled to his death. Right before he died he told me ââ¬Å"We will beà together againâ⬠¦ I promiseâ⬠¦ I love you and the babyâ⬠¦and both of you will be always in y heart. â⬠He looked so peaceful and handsome just like the first day I had met him; my heart was torn into pieces as he drew his last breath. He lay there dead in my arms staring at me with his emerald green eyes. I felt helpless as I held him even closer and kept screaming and crying ââ¬Å"NOâ⬠¦ NO THIS CANââ¬â¢T BE HAPPENINGâ⬠¦NOT TO MEâ⬠¦NOT AGAIN!! â⬠He will always be in my heart; whenever the wind blows I can still hear him whispering sweet things in my ear. Sometimes when you find happiness again in your life, it turns into your worst nightmare.
